New World Hospitality, which acquired Rosewood Hotels and Resorts in 2011 and was renamed Rosewood Hotel Group in 2013, has started managing what used to be the Hyatt Hotel and Casino in Ermita effective January 2015. This brings New World’s room inventory in the Philippines to 974 —598 in Makati and 376 in Manila. The Manila property is called New World Manila Bay, and its General Manager is also a returning expat and longtime Shangri-La GM, Mark Heywood. Heywood first came to the Philippines in 1993 as the second GM of the first Shangri-La property in the country, the Edsa Shangri-La Manila.
Megaworld Corporation has big plans for its two international hotel brands, Savoy and Belmont. My understanding is that there will be a Savoy and a Belmont in their townships in Resorts World Manila, Mactan, and Boracay. The Manila properties are expected to open this year.
And finally, after hurdling too many bumps, Manila Bay Resorts—owned by popular Japanese casino and slot machine mogul Kazuo Okada— is building fast and is expected to start operations by 2016 in Pagcor City, making it the third giant player in what is fast becoming the ‘Las Vegas’ of the Philippines.
